Demand for online education apps rocketed in the first week of the Spring term as schools were forced to close and go online for lessons under new coronavirus restrictions, according to app tracker Airnow.
School terms resumed on 4 January and in the week of the 3rd – 9th and Google Classroom downloads increased by 1,500% followed by Duolingo – Language Lessons and Seesaw Class.
Downloads of Duolingo increased 28.1% on Apple and 15.4% on Android while Seesaw Class recorded an increase on the prior week of 1700% for Apple users and 2600% on Android.
Business Apps have also continued to see a sharp rise in downloads, said Airnow, due to the traditional start of job hunting in January and online conferences.
Across both Apple and Android devices, the top three apps downloaded were Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet.
Among the specialist job-seeking apps, LinkedIn: Network & Job Finder and Indeed Job Search were the most sought after.
Those looking for light relief from the job search continued to download entertainment apps with Disney+ top followed by Amazon Prime Video and Netflix.
“As lockdown descended upon the country once again, it makes sense that online education apps and apps to facilitate communication and collaboration lead the charts,” said Tim Armes, Airnow Data Client Services Director.
“We expect this trend to continue in the weeks to come as the full effect of learning and working remotely takes hold.”
